Me June 2009
Wow, my new doctors really are awesome. I already got calls back with some of my blood test results. Usually that takes weeks.
- I have low B12
- I have low Iron
- My glucose meds are working to lower my insulin! Score!!

I am so glad some doctors are finally taking me seriously. I've been begging someone to check my B12 and Iron since I got back from Mayo cuz:
(a) I have all the symptoms - both cause extreme fatigue!!
(b) Crohn's is notorious for vitamin deficiencies
(c) I was being treated for low B12 before Mayo but the new primary I started seeing stopped the treatment

Just more proof that my primary could give a shit about getting me well and is more worried about his stupid ego. I can't wait to start seeing the new one. Anyway....

Couch fort night was super fun. Dinner turned out so tasty, and I surprised Nick with yummy ice cream dessert. We watched The Office (it was so good this week! Oooh, and LOST was awesome) and a bunch of other stuff including part of An Inconvenient Truth. It reminds me of something I would watch in science class, but I like it. Here's a fuzzy pic of Katie in the Couch Fort:

Haha, one of my friends just called. She was having a math problem at work and wanted my help solving it. That made me feel really important and smart. hehe.

I am gonna go watch my last 3 episodes of Six Feet Under. Man, I am going to miss the Fisher family....

Hurray for doctors who take your case seriously and explore the options in more depth. What is the matter with that primary doc you have? Good grief, what business is he in? Certainly need to be more attentive to your concerns and not stop treatment that is helping you.

Good luck. Are these the docs at Duke that you mentioned a while back, or local?

Makes me wonder if I have low B12. What is done for that?

Ages ago I was told to take iron pills. I stopped at one point. Maybe I should start back.

For low B12 you can take supplements or have shots. I prefer the shots - especially since supplements are hard for people with crohn's to absorb.

how often do you get the shots?

When I was getting them I actually gave them to myself at home. I took one once a week for a while, then they moved me to once a month. I think one a month is normal to keep your B12 up. The once a week was just to get me back to a normal level.

Doing the shots at home saved the doc's office time & saved me my $15 copay each time I went in. It was weird, but easy. They taught me how to do it, and it was actually kinda empowering.

Where do you have to do the shot?

I did it in my upper thigh. Usually the doctors give them in your arm.

It's so easy - they will show you where to put it, and it actually hurts a lot less if you give it to yourself.
